Lab-Made Mimic of SARS-CoV-2
September 15, 2020 | Terry Sharrer
In order to engineer a virus that mimics SARS-CoV-2 without causing COVID-19’s severe symptoms, virologists at Washington University in St. Louis recombined the SARS’ spike protein gene into the genome of vesicular stomatitis virus. VSV causes, as most, mild flu like symptoms in humans; so this genetically engineered “VSV-SARS-CoV-2” hybrid should allow more scientists to carry out research in less restrictive biocontainment.
