“Spritam:” the First Approved 3-D Printed Pill

Earlier this year, “Spritam,” an anti-epilepsy drug in a new formulation, from an Ohio biotech, became the first FDA approved 3-D printed pharmaceutical. 3-D printing allowed the manufacturer to create a highly porous structure that delivered a higher dose of the medicine, which dissolved quickly in the mouth with a sip of water. Other medicines that require many pills or IV delivery for accurate dosing could follow this example. MORE
