While it’s unclear why the rate of premature births has risen over the past 20 years in developed countries (older mothers?, obesity?, changing environment? et al) the long term health consequences for mother and baby are significant. There are invasive means for determining the risk of premature birth, but British researchers believe that certain biomarkers in urine (N-acetylated glycoprotein for one) are good indicators in the first trimester when ameliorating therapies could prove most effective.
