It may be one of the most glaring ironies of modern times that people in the world’s lowest income countries, with little in the way of food, clothing and shelter, own cellphones and buy use time by the minute. What this implies is that cellphones are a near universal access tool for healthcare, which the NIH’s Fogarty International Center hopes to advance with its new grant program “Mobile Health: Technology & Outcomes in Low and Middle Income Countries.” This year’s application deadline has already passed, but enough time now stands to form a required collaboration between partners in the US and low income countries for next year’s round.
