Urine test strips for glucose date back to 1850, but they became a common way diabetics monitored their levels after insulin was widely available. Strips that identify levels of glucose, bilirubin, proteins, ketone, leukocytes, etc. are used today, along with automated test strip analyzers, but this piece reports on smartphone app that compares a phone’s picture of a strip to a color scale for a reading.
