Computerized Screening for Occult Disease
November 6, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
One of the advantages electronic medical records offer is the computerized screening of a patient’s data for undiagnosed illness. An example of that is a screening algorithm, developed at the PSNA College of Engineering and Technology (Tamilnadu, India) for thyroid disease. By taking account of blood test values, and recorded symptoms such as depression, dry skin, slow pulse, low female fertility and cold intolerance, computerized screening identified hypo- and hyper- thyroidism in 93.5% of blinded but known cases. This was only a slight improvement over conventional diagnosis, but small increments means millions of people among India’s huge population. MORE
