Wearable Sensors: Personal Health Monitoring
Whether he actually invented a device for measuring walking distance or simply brought one home from Europe, Thomas Jefferson gets credit for introducing the pedometer to America two centuries ago. Recently, pedometers such as the Nike-iPod Sports kit (a shoe sensor that wirelessly transmits elapsed time, distance and calories data to the wearer’s iPod) and the Nokia 5500 Sports Phone have become popular ways to measure activity for weight control. “Fitbit” is another, small size pedometer that can be clipped on clothes or a wristband for 24/7 monitoring and wireless data upload to a website for analysis. This device runs for ten days on a single charge and is sensitive enough to track tiny movements that indicate sleep stages. MORE
