How Neural Organization Develops in an Infant

Infants, younger than four months, have multipurpose brains that have not yet specialized in processing information such as facial recognition. Such an infant sees faces the same way whether they are right side up or upside down. By six months of age, the infant can recognize faces as adults do. This was one of the findings from MIT neuroscientists’ study of nine infant brains using fMRI imaging. The next question is, do autistic children who have trouble with face recognition have the same or similar imaging patterns? MORE
