Cleveland Clinic’s Breath Analysis for Heart Attack

Acute decompensated heart failure (presenting shortness of breath, swelling of the jugular vein, and tiredness) often precedes a heart attack, and measuring those symptoms can be misleading about whether or how soon a life threatening crisis will occur. Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have found that ADHF also presents elevated levels of acetone, pentane, and nitric acid in exhaled breath, which with fast flow tube mass spectroscopy can give an accurate assessment in a short time.
