A Wearable Kidney

Dialysis patients typically go to treatment centers for four-hour sessions, three times a week. They must carefully limit their food and water intake and take 20 to 30 pills a day. This piece describes a belt-styled wearable kidney that reduces the 300 pound dialysis machine to a 2 pound apparatus that connects through an implanted catheter and is battery powered. While this is an improvement, it still presents risks of infection and malfunction, but the choices for patients are not great. MORE
