“Video Vitals”
In regions where epidemic diseases rage, being able to determine vital signs, using a smartphone camera, is a decided advantage. To that end, researchers at Penn State and Johns Hopkins have a hardware/software solution called “Video Vitals,” which allow a heartbeat evaluation at a distance of four feet from the patient. “VideoVitals, uses a combination of photo-plethysmography and computer vision to detect heart rate based on minute skin color changes. The computer vision helps to account for differences in environmental lighting, skin pigmentation, and camera quality, and to complete a measurement even when the subject is moving.” Years ago, the CIA developed something similar (an infrared camera) that could scan the face for detecting lies.
