Respicardia (Minnetonka, MN) has now implanted a breathing “pacemaker” in its first clinically approved patient. The device stimulates the phrenic nerve, which runs from the neck, down between the heart and lungs, to the diaphragm—the structure that is the motor control for breathing. Stimulating the phrenic nerve’s impulse transmission can regulate severe sleep apnea. MORE WITH VIDEO
