With every beat, the heart pumps a percentage of blood from the ventricles (mainly the left ventricle) into the ascending aorta. A healthy heart pumps about 55-70% of the blood; below 35% indicates a risk of major heart affliction. Digital stethoscope maker Eko (Berkeley, CA) uses an algorithm in their DUO device that can measure the ejection fraction of healthy people to determine if their heart is heading toward “borderline” function.
