“Gene chips,” those photolithograph devices that print stacks of DNA base sequences as a diagnostic tool, may soon be overshadowed by a 4-D printing method that can recreate entire cell surfaces. As engineers at City University of New York and Northwestern University imagine: “We envision using this system to assemble synthetic cells that allow researchers to replicate and understand the interactions that occur on living cells, which will lead to the rapid development of medicines and other bioinspired technologies.” MORE
