Vaginal Microbiota Transplants

Vaginal bacteria, like the intestinal microbiome, play an important role in maintaining health. When this culture becomes unbalanced, it can cause serious urinary tract infections and pregnancy complications. In a first of its kind clinical trial, researchers in Israel carried out a bacterial transplants from healthy women to three with intractable vaginosis (i.e. an infection unresponsive to antibiotics). Two of those treated had long term remissions from one transplant. The third woman needed two transplants. The dominant organism in this body region is Lactobacillus. MORE
