23 and Me’s Health Records Service

Like Apple’s Health app for the iPhone, 23 and Me (Mountain View, CA) hopes to become a platform that aggregates individuals’ health information, but unlike Apple, 23 and Me has been doing direct-to-consumers genetic testing since 2007. Now, it will begin asking its customers—who typically buy a $99 saliva test for analyzing ancestry and genetic predispositions—to include their lab test data, medications, and medical history. Presumably, 23 and Me would then sell this information to drug companies, but it is unclear what benefit, if any, would come to those who expose their data in an environment pocked with computer hacking.
