Patient-Ordered Medical Tests
The one thing about American healthcare that needs no further proof is that it’s expensive—indeed, the most expensive in the world. The medical establishment may blame every participant in the genre for rising costs, in a “me too” argument. But such may be top-down medicine’s undoing. This piece describes EverlyWell, a laboratory start up in Austin, TX, that now is retailing nine home diagnostic tests through CVS, Target and Humana. These do not require physician orders. The buyer simply orders a kit for, say, metabolism ($89) or food sensitivity ($159), et al, provides a sample of saliva, urine or blood, and mails the kit to EverlyWell’s CLIA partner. Results come electronically to a smatphone or email. Theranos tried this and it turned out to be a fraud; maybe EverlyWell will be true, effective competition. MORE
