For more than a quarter century, synthetic chemists have imagined how an automated reaction machine could take the drudgery out of their work. Now some coffee maker-sized machines can carry out the mixing and timing of reactions automatically using sealed cartridges and RFID chips to protect against errors. These might be called “Model T’s” because they can only do a few things, but the concept holds very large possibilities for how medicinal chemistry is done. MORE
