Five years ago, researchers reported success in growing liver “buds” (organoids) from stem cells, and three years later, another group published their work on transplanting functioning hepatic progenitor cells. This piece, from the University of Edinburgh, describes how engineers grew a larger liver (for mice) using a 3-D polycaprolactone scaffold and induced pluripotent stem cells, which they implanted under the skin rather than in the abdominal cavity.
