A.I. vs HIPAA
What’s the chief stumbling block in healthcare innovation? Knowledge? Need? Capital? Social acceptability? All of these elements can advance, retard or prevent change, but access to private health data may be the biggest challenge. As this piece notes: “Getting your hands on patient information is not as easy as waltzing into a hospital and asking for a bunch of data to train algorithms with—for a multitude of reasons, healthcare and data are like oil and water. Even with the adoption of the EHR, the lack of enforced standards produces a lot of confusion around healthcare data: different departments using different formats, inconsistent data exists across systems, and variant definitions of conditions all make the sharing and utilization of healthcare data incredibly difficult.” Computer vision, with its artificial intelligence, requires “real-life” data and access to that is less of an engineering problem than a social one.
