The US Defense Department is funding a big data study of breast cancer. The work involves DNA sequencing and protein profiling of 13,600 samples from 8,000 patients and linking that data to their electronic medical records. This involves trillions of data points for artificial intelligence analysis, but the payoff could be better diagnosis of cancer subtypes, biomarker discovery for those subtypes, and liquid biopsies that give patients a quick and accurate evaluation of their disease at earlier stages.
