Can early breast cancer be diagnosed from a strand of hair? Researchers at the University of Utah think so and have shown that changes in keratin proteins and lipid esters between the cuticle (outer hair layer) and cortex (inner hair layer), as observed with Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR–FT-IR) spectroscopy, represent biomarkers for breast cancer.
