About a third of men who are successfully treated (surgery and radiation) for localized prostate cancer still go on to have their cancer spread. Oncologists at the University of Toronto believe these occultly advanced cases can be detected with DNA fingerprinting. In a sequencing study of 500 aggressive prostate tumors, half showed specific mutations in four genes, 60% had mutations that were drug targetable, and 20% had BRCA mutations that made them good candidates for PARP inhibitors, as used to treat breast cancer.
