A “Neural Tourniquet” to Stop Bleeding Anywhere in the Body

Neural Tourniquet
Most wouldn’t guess that hacking the vagus nerve could staunch a hemorrhage, but that is exactly what researchers at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research (Manhasset, NY) claim for their “neural tourniquet,” which actually is a handheld device placed against the body where it can stimulate the vagus nerve. “The nerve stimulation conveys a signal to the spleen, where the platelet blood cells that form clots receive their instructions. This signal “primes” the platelets, prepping them to form clots if they encounter a wound anywhere in the body.” MORE
