Spotting Cancer Biomarkers with a Smartphone

Engineers at Washington State University have built a prototype spectrometer, using a 96 well plate holder, a light box, a magnifier and a smartphone’s camera, that can detect cancer biomarkers in blood samples. It can scan eight samples at a time, looking for interleukin 6 as a marker for cancers of the liver, lung, prostate, breast and vascular tissue. Testing showed a 99% accuracy rate. MORE
