Since Hippocrates’ time, medicine has depended on “feature sets” (i.e. symptoms patients presented) to give a physician some degree of predictive power for helping the sick individual. Today, the same approach is how medicine works, the difference being the huge data load making up the feature sets for hundreds, thousands or more patients. This piece describes how researchers at MIT’s Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems are creating algorithms that better prepare data for problem specifications, fostering greater collaboration between domain experts and data analysts.
