Our most faithful correspondent, Dr. Don Nagy, sent this piece about the engineering issues in miniaturizing spectrometers which researchers use to analyze visible and near ultraviolet light in a variety of R&D projects from making biosensors and nanoparticles to detecting cancer and protein composition. The issue here is that miniaturization allows greater usefulness, but the smaller the detector, the fewer photons an instrument can detect at the nanometer level (e.g. in measuring DNA aberrations).
