James Holman’s name is little remembered today, but it should be, especially because of this piece. Holman (1786-1857) was a British naval officer who walked around the world and became “history’s greatest traveler” according to his biographer, Jason Roberts. Simply accomplishing his travels was remarkable enough, but even more so because he mostly traveled alone and was completely blind. He navigated by making a clicking sound with his mouth and way-finding by echolocation. Now there are some sneakers that do the same thing. Will wonders never cease! MORE
