Issues for the “Hospital-at-Home”
August 2, 2016 | Terry Sharrer
There is a deficiency in American healthcare that is hiding in plain sight. It is the deterioration of the physician-patient relationship. One expression of that is the physician not knowing when the patient is able to carry out self-care at home. This is important because most of medical errors—which is the third leading cause of untimely death—arise from in-hospital care (or lack thereof). While it is well established that home care can reduce health costs and hospital readmissions, while improving patient satisfaction, CMS doesn’t reimburse care at home (though, of course, it covers nursing home care). A pilot project at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, however, aims to build the case for the hospital-at-home. MORE
