Bioengineers at the University of Michigan have developed a microfluidics chip containing live kidney cells which they use to measure the extent medications cause kidney damage. One test, for example, showed that a once daily dose of drug was less damaging than a longer infusion even when both methods delivered the same amount of medication. “This is believed to be the first time such a device has been used to study how a medication behaves in the body over time, called its “pharmacokinetic profile.” MORE
