Using Radar to Monitor BP
May 24, 2016 | Terry Sharrer
Medical device startup Blumio (Miami Beach, FL) is in the R&D phase of creating a passive, continuous blood pressure monitor that relies on low power radar to make its readings. The prototype is a wrap that fits on the bicep (same height as the heart) with two radar antennas for detecting pulse wave. The time it takes for the pulse pressure to travel between the two antenna points produces a reading that transmits to a smartphone app. This may not be quite as accurate as the traditional BP cuff, but its consistency is what matters more.
