Silicon Photonics and Optical MEMS

Engineers at Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (“A*STAR) are working on environmental microsensors that rely on photonics to determine highly accurate readings of temperature and humidity, and perhaps soon, of gases too. As one researcher describes the compact silicon photonic sensor, “The device splits light into two beams, which travel through different materials and are then brought back together. The resulting interference pattern gives information about the light and the surrounding temperature.” MORE
