The “hardware-in-the-loop method,” associate with automobile manufacturing, may actually be modern take on interchangeable parts, though the modern part relies on computerized design, automated processes, and integrated design safety. Engineers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing, Engineering and Automation in Mannheim, Germany are now proposing that HiL can be applied to making medical devices—with the same benefits of interchangeable parts: lower cost and faster assembly.
