Extended Release Pill that Attaches to the GI Tract

Research engineers at MIT have devised a two-sided pill, where one side sticks to mucosal tissue of the GI tract, and the other side has imbedded drugs for extended release. The mucosal adhesive is a carbopol polymer, the omniphobic side is made of cellulose acetate (which resists being gummed up with food). Antibiotics or other medicines can be placed on the cellulose acetate side or between the two layers. While this piece doesn’t mention the possibility of attaching ingestible sensors in this manner, that is another possibility. MORE
