Glucose Sensing Breathalyzer
March 22, 2016 | Terry Sharrer
Several stories about glucose-sensing breathalyzers have come to Tagline over the past few years. They all have certain things in common—most importantly a means for measuring volatile organic compounds in breath (there are about 200 VOCs). Some detect hydrogen in breath, others work on ketones—the presence of which indicate glucose malabsorption. This piece and the Applied Nanodetectors (Middlesex, UK) website it leads to do not disclose what exactly is being detected, but the thought of a low cost, printed-on-plastic film sensor could be as disruptively innovative as the personal glucometer was a half century ago.
