James Hiram Bedford died in 1967 and was the first person to be cryopreserved. His body survives, along with baseball great Ted Williams, in the Alcor Life Extension Foundation facility in Scottsdale, AZ. Restoring a frozen body to life remains a fantasy, but cryopreservation for organs seems less science-fiction-like, as researchers report new preservatives, such as acetyl modified trehalose, and magnetic nanoparticles for controlled warming. Before Alcor can thaw Ted Williams back to life, they will have to figure out how to reattach his severed head. MORE
