Microfluidics devices enable liquid biopsies, but this piece goes one step further: it miniaturizes two lab chips—one capable of capturing a tissue sample and the other for PCR amplification of mRNA—which together are small enough to fit inside a 32 gage hypodermic needle. With this sort of point-of-care device, it might be possible to measure chemotherapy toxicity in an hour or less. MORE
