Guthrie Cards for Everyone

Almost everyone born in the US since 1970 had a state-mandated protein screening done at birth performed with dried blood collected on a Guthrie card. High levels of certain amino acids often indicated an inborn error of metabolism. But researchers at the University of Victoria (British Columbia) have identified 25 different biomarkers in dried blood that could indicate cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. Their monitoring scenario is one where people put a drop of blood on filter paper and send it to a lab for analysis, as a routine measure of personal health responsibility. MORE
