Brain Oximetry in Treating Gliomas
August 4, 2015 | Terry Sharrer
Gliomas, like other solid tumors, have low oxygen levels (hypoxia) at their cores, which inhibits both chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Breathing an enriched oxygen gas can make the tumors more vulnerable, but questions over the oxygen level and timing remain. Researchers at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (Lebanon, NH) have shown how those questions might be answered. In animal studies, they implanted an electron paramagnetic resonator in gliomas and thus were able to show the tumors oximetry. This could be an important step for personalized medicine. MORE
