Precise Measurement for Prosthetic Fit

Those of you facing a hip replacement, now or eventually, ought to ask the surgeon how he or she measures the length of the leg. A tape measure, perhaps? A two centimeter error, resulting in a longer or shorter leg, can not only be painful, but a stress factor for the prosthetic’s life expectancy. Researchers at one of the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany have improved this situation with a device that attaches to the patient’s leg to record the movement arc. Then, with an adjustable prosthetic, the fit can be corrected to match the arc. MORE
