Clipping Off Antigens for Universal Type O blood

This is an “almost there” story. Researchers at the University of British Columbia created a “mutant” enzyme that clips A and B antigens off of red blood cells—leaving universal O type blood. It’s “almost there” because the enzyme doesn’t do this completely. Still, the process may yet be perfected allowing A, B and AB blood to be converted into a type nearly all patients can receive. MORE
