Microcapsules for Slow Release Drug Delivery

It doesn’t take a crystal ball to foresee a medical tsunami coming with osteoarthritis among the aging population. Virtually every person over age 65 will suffer from arthritis, with pain killers and joint replacement being among a narrow range of treatment choices. Researchers in London, however, may have a new therapeutic—microcapsules of C-type naturiretic peptide that alleviates the inflammation. This is not a synthetic drug, but a naturally occurring substance. The capsules actually are multiple layers of the peptide that allow slow release at an injection site. Otherwise, the peptide cannot survive long enough to give relief while allowing repair. MORE
