Monitoring Sleep Apnea with a Smart Phone

Sleep apnea is nothing to snore over. It can be debilitating by itself, as well as indicating other issues like hypertension, diabetes and depression. Sleep labs use polysomnography to investigate apnea, but a simple app and earphones from researchers at the Stevens Institute of Technology and Florida State University may be both effective and unobtrusive. The earphones plug into a smartphone on a bedside table and an app tracks the sounds while filtering out background noise.
