Automatically Defining Bone Structure in X-ray Images

Centenarians may be the healthiest of all age groups (having lived through the cardiovascular and cancer diseases that kill younger people), except for one disease: arthritis, which rises from about 30% of people in their 60’s to near 100% among the oldest elders. Arthritis is so common that radiologists, who have to observe the bone damage, have trouble keeping up with the traffic. To address this, researchers at Manchester University (UK) have developed a software program that outlines bones automatically. This makes the x-ray reads much faster and potentially opens the way for automated scanning. MORE
