Theophylline is a drug commonly prescribed for COPD and asthma, and sometimes for infant apnea. It relaxes bronchial muscles and has an anti-inflammatory effect, but it also increases heart rate, while raising blood pressure and renal blood flow. It comes in 100 to 450mg strength tablets, and without knowing a patient’s metabolic rate, dosing is an “informed” guess. As genomics provided more insights into individual metabolism, personalized pill printing—as the video in this piece shows for theophylline tablets—could address the individual needs of any patient.
