The Sequencer in Your Pocket
November 4, 2014 | Terry Sharrer
This device, the “MinIon” from Oxford Nanopore in Britain, does not appear to be ready for “prime time,” but advances in smartphone-sized DNA sequencers are coming quickly and have the potential for being a highly “disruptive innovation.” The fact that a 4” sequencer can read strings of up to 79,000 bases drawn through a nanopore membrane is quite remarkable, but the shortcoming at present is its accuracy. Some users called it “error prone,” but that might be corrected with more sensitive electrical current detection. Stay tuned. MORE
