For some time, a rap on genomic sequencing has been that it’s best at identifying diseases that can’t be cured. There’s truth in that, but it’s also true that even incurable diseases can be treated to the patient’s advantage and getting the diagnosis right in the first place is immensely important. This piece, reporting on the NIH’s “MedSeq” project, reviews rapid progress in exome sequencing for metabolic diseases, cardiomyopathy, cancer, epilepsy, and mental retardation, along with observations about its limitations at present.
