Remote Medical Imaging with Ultrasound

Since “Operation Lindbergh” in 2001, where a surgeon in New York using robots removed the gallbladder of a patient in Strasbourg, France, this kind of telemedicine has not overtaken traditional surgery, but with data transmission improvements remote ultrasound diagnostics may become feasible in the near term. A French company, AdEcho Tech (Huisseau en Beauce, Loir-et-Cher Dept.) has developed a system, “Melody,” which uses a robotic arm to move an ultrasound probe, via either satellite, fiber optic, or 3G/4G telephone connections.
