Bridging Neurodegeneration

Within neurons, a protein “bridge” exists that connects the energy producing mitochondria and the calcium storing (for signaling) endoplasmic reticulum; disruption of that connection causes or contributes to neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and fronto-temporal dementia, according to recent discoveries at Kings College London. Aberrant proteins appear to be responsible for breaking the essential scaffold. MORE
