Billed as “the world’s first regeneration of a living organ,” scientists in the University of Edinburgh’s Center for Regenerative Medicine, coaxed mouse stem cells to regrow a mouse thymus—an organ where T-lymphocytes originate. Because aging in humans compromises thymus function and can contribute to life-threatening infections, the concept of regenerating the thymus holds important, if distant, promise for peoples’ health.
